Procedure for Adding 301 Redirects
What is a 301 redirect?
301 redirects permanently redirect one URL to another, seamlessly.
When does eFlorist implement a 301 redirect?
1. When a custom category is built and there is currently an active global category that needs turned off.
2. Anytime text is copied/pasted word-for-word on a page that will exist, from a page that will no longer exist.
Example:
Old URL: thanksgiving-flowers-92c.asp
New URL: autumn-flowers-325311c.asp
How do I apply a 301 redirect?
- Marketing & Promotions > URL Management > 301 Redirects > Add New
- Do not include the domain name, only everything after the “/” slash.
Why are 301 redirects important?
- They tell Google that indexed page “A” is no longer a valid page, but the new page “B” appearing on the site with the same/similar content is the new valid “A” page.
- Duplicate text content is bad, so to keep Google from blacklisting a category, page or website, we have to tell it that there is a legitimate switch with a 301 redirect.
